Will of Thomas Jarvis

Thomas Jarvis (1690-1755) son of
William Jarvis and Elizabeth Duparkes, prepared his will on August 16, 1747,
and his will was proved on August 22, 1755. The following will of
Thomas Jarvis of Northampton County appears in the Norfolk County, Virginia
Will Book 1 (1755-1772)
"In the name of God Amen. I
Thomas Jarvis of North Hampton County in Virginia being at this time in
health and strength and memory, Praised be to Almighty God, but calling to
mind the uncertainty of this life, I do make and ordain this my Last Will
and Testament. First and principally I do give and recommend my soul
to Almighty God who gave it, and to my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ
trusting His mercy I shall enjoy Everlasting Life and - - - - at the
direction of my Executor here after mentioned and to the disposing of
my worldly goods shall be as followeth.
I give to my son William Jarvis my Negro
boy named James and a horse called Whistler and a saddle and bridle to him
and his heirs, My desire is that my son William shall allow his aunt
Charity Cowdry a maintanence provided she will live with him. And if
she moves from him, then he is to pay three barrels of corn a year. And
also I give my said son a cow and a calf, three sheep and two hogs, the
choice I have.
I give to my daughter, Elizabeth
Jarvis one horse called Ranger and a side saddle and bridle and one cow and
calf, three head of sheep and my loom? and harness and three hogs, the
choice one given.
I give to my grandson, William
Ellet (Elliott?) a heifer of two years old and to my grandson Thomas Ellet
one heifer of a year old.
I give to my grandson Harason
Benthall one heifer of two years old.
My will is all the remainder part of my
Estate after my just debts are paid shall be equally divided between my son
and three daughters, Marg, Elizia, and Elizabeth by my two friends, Thomas
and James Goffigon.
My will is that my Estate shall not be
appraised.
Lastly I do designate, nominate and
appoint my son William Jarvis my Executor of this my Last Will, utterly
revoking all former wills made by me, and this to remain my Last Will and
Testament whereunto I have set my hand and fixed my seal this 16th day of
August one thousand seven hundred and forty seven."
