Chincoteague
Island, claimed by the first white man in 1671, was known to the Indians
as "Gingoteague" or "Beautiful Land Across the Water". With the exception
of salvaging ship wrecks off Assateague Island, its primary economy was
farming and livestock. Soon, however, the water became the
main source of income, as it is today.
Chincoteague
is world famous for their oyster beds and clam shoals, tranquil beaches
and the wild ponies. You will enjoy outdoor recreation at its very
best, boating, FISHING,
boating, crabbing, HUNTING,
beach-combing, biking or hiking. If shopping is more to your taste,
the Island abounds with specialty shops and galleries. For the history
enthusiast, there is an Oyster and Maritime Museum, a Waterfowl Museum
and the NASA Museum and Visitors Center.
Come visit Chincoteague
Island to experience for yourself, the tranquility and beauty God created.
